Sticky Thermal Paper & Linerless Labels: The Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about sticky thermal paper — what it is, how it works, which printers use it, and why businesses are making the switch.

If you’ve heard the terms “sticky thermal paper” or “linerless labels” and wondered what the fuss is about, you’re in the right place. This guide covers everything — what they are, how they work, which printers use them, and why thousands of restaurants, retailers, and warehouses are making the switch.

At Paper Rolls Plus, we’ve been supplying businesses with thermal paper since 1985. We’ve watched this technology evolve from a niche product into one of the fastest-growing categories in the POS supply industry. Here’s what you need to know.

01What Is Sticky Thermal Paper?

Sticky thermal paper — also called linerless labels or liner-free labels — is thermal paper with adhesive on one side. When printed, each receipt or label peels off the roll and sticks directly to whatever surface you need: a food container, a shipping box, a product, or a shelf.

Unlike traditional labels, there’s no backing paper to peel off. No liner. No waste. The roll is continuous, and a built-in cutter on your printer trims each label to the exact length needed.

Think of it this way: regular thermal paper gives you a receipt. Sticky thermal paper gives you a receipt that’s also a sticker.

02How Does It Work?

Sticky thermal paper has three layers:

The print surface — a thermal-reactive coating on top that produces text and images when heat is applied by the printer head. This works exactly like standard thermal paper.

The adhesive layer — a pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back of the paper. At Paper Rolls Plus, our sticky thermal paper uses full coverage adhesive, meaning the entire back surface is coated. This provides stronger, more consistent adhesion compared to diamond-pattern adhesive that only covers portions of the back.

The release coating — a silicone-based coating on the print surface that prevents the adhesive from sticking to the next layer on the roll. This is what allows the paper to unwind smoothly through the printer without jamming.

When the printer feeds the paper, prints on it, and cuts it to length, you get a perfectly sized label that’s ready to stick — no peeling, no liner waste, no extra steps.

03Full Coverage Adhesive: Why It Matters

Not all sticky thermal paper is created equal. The adhesive pattern makes a significant difference in real-world performance.

Full coverage adhesive coats the entire back of the paper. Every square inch has adhesive. This means the label grips firmly and consistently on smooth containers, curved surfaces, cold cups, and packaging materials. You get reliable adhesion regardless of where you stick it.

Diamond-pattern adhesive applies adhesive in a diamond grid with gaps between the adhesive points. This was an early approach to linerless technology. It works for flat surfaces, but the gaps can cause issues on curved containers, cold or condensation-covered surfaces, and smaller labels where the adhesive gaps represent a larger percentage of the surface area.

Paper Rolls Plus sticky thermal paper uses full coverage adhesive exclusively. It costs a bit more to manufacture, but the performance difference is worth it — especially in food service environments where labels need to stick to containers that may be hot, cold, or slightly damp.

04Why Are Businesses Switching to Sticky Thermal Paper?

The shift to sticky thermal paper is driven by practical benefits that add up quickly:

Eliminates liner waste. Traditional labels produce a backing liner for every single label printed. In a busy restaurant printing 500+ labels per day, that’s a significant pile of waste. Linerless labels produce zero liner waste — what comes off the roll is what sticks to the product. No trash, no cleanup, no overflowing waste bins next to the printer.

More labels per roll. Without a backing liner taking up space, you get substantially more labels on each roll. Our 3 1/8″ x 270′ rolls contain over 50% more media than a standard 170′ roll. That means fewer roll changes during busy shifts, less downtime, and lower per-label costs.

Variable label sizes. With traditional pre-cut labels, you’re stuck with one size. If your label content only needs 2 inches of space, you’re still using a 4-inch label. Sticky thermal paper prints any length — the printer’s auto-cutter trims each label to exactly the size needed. Short order? Short label. Long order with modifications? Longer label. No waste, no awkward blank space.

Lower total cost. Between more labels per roll, zero liner waste, reduced waste disposal, fewer roll changes, and lower shipping weight (no liner = lighter boxes), the total cost of ownership drops significantly compared to traditional labels. Most businesses see the cost difference within the first few cases.

Better for the environment. Our sticky thermal paper is FSC certified and Total Phenol Free. FSC certification means the paper comes from responsibly managed forests. Total Phenol Free means no BPA, no BPS, and no other phenol-based chemicals — safer for food contact and for the people handling the paper every day.

05Who Uses Sticky Thermal Paper?

Sticky thermal paper has found a home in every industry that needs labels printed on demand:

Quick-service restaurants and fast food — Order labels that stick directly to bags, cups, and containers. Kitchen order tickets that stick to prep stations. Drive-through labels for order accuracy.

Coffee shops and cafés — Cup labels with customer names and custom drink orders. Food case labels for pastries and grab-and-go items.

Grocery and deli counters — Weigh-and-price labels for deli items, bakery, meat, and produce. No separate label printer needed — the POS printer handles everything.

Warehouse and logistics — Shipping labels, bin location labels, inventory tags. Variable-length labels mean you’re not wasting oversized labels on small packages.

Retail — Price labels, promotional labels, shelf tags. Print on demand instead of ordering pre-printed labels.

Healthcare — Patient identification, specimen labeling, pharmacy labels. Full adhesive coverage ensures labels stay put in clinical environments.

07Available Sizes

3 1/8″ x 170′ — Full Coverage Adhesive — The standard size for most 80mm linerless printers. Available in cases of 6 and 18 rolls. This is the go-to for restaurants, coffee shops, and retail.

3 1/8″ x 270′ — Full Coverage Adhesive — Extended length — 100 feet more per roll than the 170′ version. Fewer roll changes, same great adhesion. Available in 18-roll cases for high-volume operations.

2 1/4″ x 270′ — Full Coverage Adhesive — Narrow-format sticky thermal paper for 58mm printers. At 270 feet per roll, these are significantly longer than what most suppliers offer in this size. Available in cases of 6 and 36 rolls.

08How to Switch from Traditional Labels

Step 1: Check your printer. If you already have a linerless-capable printer (see the list above), you’re ready. If not, you’ll need a printer that supports linerless media.

Step 2: Order a trial case. Start with a single case of the appropriate size for your printer. Run it through your normal operations for a few days.

Step 3: Compare. Track how many roll changes you do versus traditional labels. Notice the lack of liner waste. Watch how the variable-length cutting reduces paper waste on short orders.

Step 4: Scale up. Once you’ve confirmed it works for your operation, switch your regular orders over. Volume pricing is available — the more you order, the more you save.

09Frequently Asked Questions
